THEMIS POLSKA was one of the first Polish periodicals systematically devoted to issues of jurisprudence. The journal was founded during a period of intensive development of legal sciences in the Kingdom of Poland, when modern Polish academic and legal circles were taking shape. It featured contributions from law professors, judges, government officials, and researchers specializing in the theory and practice of law. Of particular significance were articles on the interpretation of existing laws, the history of law, and civil and commercial law.
One of the journal’s co-founders, Antoni Heylman (1796–1877), was a lawyer, legal historian, and professor at the University of Warsaw. He focused primarily on the history of the Polish political system and law, as well as on teaching. Romuald Hube (1803–1890) was one of the most distinguished Polish lawyers of the 19th century; he was a professor of law and an expert in criminal law and the history of legislation. Wacław Aleksander Maciejowski (1792–1883) was a legal historian and the author of numerous works on the history of Polish and European legislation. Their work had a significant impact on the development of Polish legal scholarship in the 19th century.
Volumes 3–4 contain dissertations and materials on civil law, commercial law, and legal literature. The published articles include analyses of legal institutions, commentaries on judicial practice, theoretical reflections, and reviews of legal literature. The journal combined an academic character with a practical purpose, addressing its content to both the academic community and legal practitioners.
