An exceptional coin!
One of the rarest grosz coins of Sigismund II Augustus in beautiful mint condition.
A Vilnius grosz minted in the Lithuanian standard in 1545—the coin that marked the beginning of grosz minting during this ruler’s reign. Minted one year before the mint began producing grosz coins based on the Polish standard at this mint. The issue is consistently rated by catalog authors at the highest rarity grade (R8) and was valued by Tyszkiewicz at 75 marks!
This specimen is the type featuring the small “Columns under the Pogoń” coat of arms, which separates the date. It appears only in this single, first issue.
One of the most beautiful examples of the 1545 issue we have seen on the auction market.
