drypoint, etching/paper
Dimensions: 12.5 x 9.5 cm (inside the mat)
signed on the plate, lower left: 'Renoir'
The work is from Théodore Duret’s book *Die Impressionisten* (published in 1914 by Bruno Cassirer, Berlin).
The subject “Le chapeau épinglé” (“The Pinned Hat”) was depicted by Renoir in three variations executed in the etching/drypoint technique.
In the scene depicting two young girls, one of whom is pinning a hat onto the other, the models were Julie Manet—daughter of the Impressionist Berthe Morisot and niece of Édouard Manet—and her cousin, Paulette Gobillard. The scene comes from a study the artist made during a vacation on the coast of northern France with Morisot and her family. Julie Manet was Renoir’s favorite model, and in this painting he depicted her on the beach with her cousin, who was adjusting the pin on her large sun hat.
