Judyta Sobel (Lviv 1924 – New York 2012) studied from 1947 to 1950 at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź. She was a student of Władysław Strzemiński. At the turn of 1948–49, she participated in the First Exhibition of Modern Art in Kraków. Toward the end of her studies, she briefly served as an assistant to Stefan Wegner (who was dismissed from his position in the spring of 1950). Shortly thereafter, she left for Israel and then for the United States, where she settled in New York. In 1998–99 and 2000, her works from private collections were exhibited at the Starmach Gallery in Kraków: “The First Exhibition of Modern Art—Fifty Years Later” and “The Modernists and Socialist Realism,” and were reproduced in the accompanying catalogs. They represent figurative painting, yet at the same time, in terms of their stylized forms and the manner of applying paint, they are radically expressionistic, bordering on abstraction.
