Before I will talk about the wine, a brief introduction of the producer: R. Pouilon is a family run winery in Champagne region, which was set up in 1947 by Roger Pouilon. At present the winery is run by his nephew Fabryce Pouilon. It is a boutique producer: they own 40 parcels which total to just 6 hectares.
Les Blanchiens is one of the flagship labels of this producer. The wine is available in extremely limited quantities. For example in 2021 only 2350 bottles were produced. Only 10 of these bottles were imported to the polish market. The champagnes from R. Pouillon are available at best restaurants in the world such as Mirszur or Loouis XV.
the base wine is aged for 12 months in new oak barrels and then 5 more years sur lieu. The fermentation is conducted with use of indigenous yeast. The harvest is hand performed and nay form of mechanization is avoided - for more labour intensive work, horses are used.
This is one of the 10 best champagnes, that I have ever tasted. Its main advantage is the unbelievable complexity. In the nose it has an dominant bread aroma together with yeast, minerality (salt and stones), but also some oxidative notes of bitten apple. The minerality is intensive also in the mouth. This wine is crisp, with good acidity. Fruit notes of pear, grey reinette, quince and hipopphae. The nuance of old wood polish is also worth mentioning.
