Monforte d'Alba, Barolo
Comments
Poderi Aldo Conterno was founded in 1961, when Aldo Conterno bought the Favot estate. Prior to this event, he and his brother Giacomo had managed the famous family estate for nearly 10 years. Aldo left over stylistic differences. While Giacomo wanted to continue his father's orthodox even classical line, Aldo considered himself a balanced modernist. He left and founded his own brand so that he could mature wines in a combination of different barrels and flirt with the French school of winemaking. Aldo passed away in 2012. He passed away as one of the most important producers in the region. Today the estate is managed by his children: Franco, Stefano and Giacomo.
Gran Bussia is arguably the most important wine in Aldo Conterno's portfolio. It is made from the most important habitats of the Bussia crop: Romirasco, Cicala, Colonnello, which are combined in such a way as to emphasize their diversity and create a balanced whole.
A wine that is intense and rich, but at the same time sensual. It blends these two qualities as I think only Barolo can. It's based on fruit grown on marl soils, and only comes to market after 6 years of cellar ripening. It rewards patience beautifully, offering a bouquet of dried cherries, autumn leaves, herbs, leather stripe and tobacco, which are encapsulated by pleasant notes of lavender, mint and rosemary in a long finish. The 1990 vintage is ready today.
