[Africa]. Theodor von Heuglin. Journey to Abyssinia, the Gala Lands, East Sudan, and Khartoum in 1861 and 1862. Jena, 1868. Hermann Costenoble, pp. XII, 459, [3], plate 10 (color lithographs, woodcuts), map 1 (fold-out lithograph), 23 cm, later binding, cloth.
An account of a journey to Africa by Theodor von Heuglin (1824–1876), a German traveler, zoologist, ornithologist, and explorer. In 1861–1862, he traversed Abyssinia, the Galla (Oromo) lands, and Sudan as part of an expedition organized to find the missing traveler Eduard Vogel. The author describes the topography, climate, flora, and fauna of the regions he visited, devoting considerable attention to zoological and ornithological observations—the latter of which brought him the greatest fame as a researcher. Equally valuable are his descriptions of the peoples inhabiting East Africa, covering customs, beliefs, social organization, trade, and political relations among local rulers. The letters “JR” appear at the bottom of the spine of the bookplate. Some discoloration and soiling; in good condition.
