Rudolf MAISON
1854 Steinweg - 1904 Munich
German sculptor of the Romanticism and Naturalism currents. He studied modeling in Munich with Johann von Halbig. From 1877 he studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich. In the following years he did his military service and supported himself as a teacher, draughtsman and designer. He gained knowledge of sculpture on his own. In 1879 he opened his own studio in Munich.
He attracted the attention of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who placed many orders with him. In 1891, he was awarded the title of "Royal Bavarian Professor." In 1892, he was one of the founders of the Munich Secession. In 1895, he became an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and later also of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and the Vienna Artists' Cooperative.
His most important works include the Fountain of Fame in Herrenchiemsee, the Centaur Fountain in Fürth, the Teichman Fountain in Bremen and the Kaiser Friedrich Memorial in Berlin.
As Alexander Heilmeyer wrote: "... when Maison carved a horse, you could believe you were looking at a living horse. In making his figures, he recreated every detail, every wrinkle. In addition, Maison enhanced the realistic impression with color."
