L. Hartwig (1883-1975) - Polish artist photographer. Member of the Union of Polish Artists Photographers. A distinguished resident of Lublin. Ludwik Hartwig (son of Andrzej Hartwig, a craftsman from Lviv) spent his early childhood in Kyiv. In 1896-after graduating from the elementary school at St. Catherine's Church in Odesa (1985)-he became a journeyman at Jakub Tyraspolsky's photographic establishment in Odesa. In 1899-1901 he worked at a branch of Jakub Tyraspolsky's photographic establishment in Lodz and, from 1901, at another branch in Warsaw. After going to Moscow, he worked at Apelt's photographic establishment from 1903 to 1906. From 1906 to 1917 he ran his own photographic establishment in Moscow. In 1917, after the outbreak of the October Revolution in Russia, he left with his family (his wife and children - Valentine, Edward, Helena, Sophia) for the territory of present-day Poland, to Lublin. In Lublin, from 1919, he ran his own photography business, specializing in portrait photography. In addition to portrait photography, Ludwik Hartwig performed many other photographic commissions, working with Lublin magazines, among others, and in 1926-1927 he worked with the Municipal Theater in Lublin. In 1928 he was a co-founder of the Lublin photographers' guild, where he served as chairman of the Provincial Examination Commission for photographers in Lublin. After the outbreak of World War II, after the largest bombing of Lublin during the war - on September 9, 1939 - he made a photographic documentation of the destruction of the city for the magistrate. At that time, his photographic facility was also destroyed (including equipment and the photographic archive of Ludwik Hartwig and his son Edward). In 1942 Ludwik Hartwig co-founded the Community of Photographers in Lublin. After the end of World War II, he ran another photography business (owned by his second wife), which was later taken over by the Zorza cooperative in 1950. In 1947 he became a member of the Scientific Council of the Scientific Craft Institute in Lublin. In 1953, he was accepted as a member of the Union of Polish Artists Photographers (card no. 171).
