Georges Braque (1882 - 1963) French painter, printmaker and sculptor. Along with Pablo Picasso, he is cited as the founder of Cubism. Georges Braque was a room painter by profession. While pursuing his primary profession, he studied evening painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1902 to 1904, he studied at the Académie Humbert. After an initial fascination with the Impressionists and then the Fauvists, he developed the theory of Cubism with Pablo Picasso between 1909 and 1914. After his military service during World War I, he slowly moved away from the rigid principles of Cubism and his style became more free. After 1930, a series of works are created in which the artist drew on motifs from ancient Greek art. George Braque in 1961 was the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Louvre.
