Jacek Malczewski was one of the most eminent artists in the history of Polish art, a leading representative of Young Poland, known as the father of symbolism in Polish painting at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The artist extremely often portrayed Michalina Janoszanka - who was herself a painter, as well as an educational and social activist, writer and poet. She was one of his most important muses. The artist had a special affection for Janoszanka and saw her not only as a model, but also as a spiritual partner and companion in conversations about art and life. Malczewski often portrayed her in allegorical roles - as the personification of youth, sensitivity, mystery or angelic protector. Their relationship became one of the most beautiful examples of the relationship between the artist and his muse in the history of Polish painting at the turn of the century.
