Lautrec painted four compositions showing horse races in Longchamps, Paris, Bois de Boulougne. but only this one was printed in lithography, making it an exception against the background of Toulouse - Lautrec portrait painting. Especially since no one but Toulouse - Lautrec had previously painted a galloping horse in the impossible real position "flying" above the ground.
The original lithograph was first printed in 1893, One piece from 1892 was sold by Christie's Auction House in 2021 for $27500.
