German genre painter. He studied in Berlin under Ludwig Wilhelm Wittich at the Academy, and from 1818-1819 in Dresden. He deepened his knowledge by diligently copying in the galleries of the palaces of Sanssouci and Dresden. From 1824, he participated in the exhibitions of the Berlin Academy. From 1827 to 1830 he lived in Düsseldorf, then in Berlin, and in 1840 in Rome. He was strongly influenced by 17th-century Dutch genre painting, especially the works of Adriaen van Ostade and Gerrit Dou. He painted humorous genre paintings. With his depictions of everyday situations, he greatly influenced the development of the painting of the Düsseldorf School.
