Bronisława Rychter-Janowska coat of arms Ślepowron - (Krakow 1868 - 1953 Krakow) - Polish painter, publicist. Her first drawing and painting teacher was her older brother Stanislaw Janowski. In 1896 she went to Munich, where she studied painting at the private schools of Anton Ažbe and Simon Hollósa. She also took lessons from portrait master Franz von Lenbach. Later she continued her studies in Florence and Rome. Bronislawa Rychter-Janowska's work is distinguished by its subtlety and moodiness, masterful play of light and shadow. A favorite subject of her works was the Polish manor and its interiors, churches and country cottages and landscapes. She also made a name for herself as a portrait painter, in which she undoubtedly benefited from lessons with the "prince of painters" von Lenbach. She used all painting techniques - oil, pastels, watercolors, and is known for her charcoal drawings, and also created macatas and appliqués. She collaborated with the Zielony Balonik (Green Balloon) cabaret in Jama Michalikowa in Cracow and with Lviv cabarets, for which she created puppet designs. She exhibited her works in Krakow, Lviv, Warsaw, Prague, Vienna, Rome, Venice and Florence. She traveled throughout almost all of Europe and northern Africa; she spent almost three years in Rome, Naples and Sicily. In 1917 she settled permanently in Krakow, and her apartment became one of the city's most famous art salons. She continued to create until the last moments of her life. The artist herself estimated her output at several thousand works. Rychter-Janowska's paintings are in many Polish and foreign museums, including the Historical Museum of the City of Cracow and the Vatican Museum, as well as private collections. Due to their also undeniable Art Nouveau decorativeness, they are still very popular at antiquarian auctions. The artist's manuscript legacy can be found in the Special Collections of the Scientific Library of the PAU and PAN in Cracow.
