Danish marine artist. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1843-46 under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. He took part in decorating the Thorvaldsen Museum in 1844. He studied perspective under the direction in late 1845. In 1846 he traveled to the Mediterranean, and in 1853-54 he visited Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and England. He made sea voyages almost every year. His easily recognizable style shows a sensitivity to the weather and its effect on the sea. He also painted more idyllic genre scenes. His marinas gained him widespread popularity, especially the battle scenes he painted during the First War for Schleswig, when he sailed on Danish Navy ships in the North Sea and Baltic. He won praise not only from Widani but also from the courts of London, St. Petersburg and Athens.
