In the foreground lies the body of Christ, taken down from the cross. Mary, his mother, supports his head and holds his left hand. In mourning, she nestles her head against his cheek. To the left of Christ sits St. John in a red cloak. He has turned away in tears and is drying his tears with a cloth. At Christ's feet, Mary Magdalene, richly dressed, kneels to anoint Christ. As a gesture of emotion, she places her hand on her heart and looks out of the picture at the viewer. On the right rises Golgotha, on the left in the background stretches a wide landscape with Jerusalem in the blue haze.
