Heinrich Hartung, called Elder (Koblenz 1851 - Koblenz 1919) - German landscape painter, active in Koblenz and for a longer period in Düsseldorf. He came from a family with artistic traditions; his father Heinrich Hartung (1816-1893) gave him his first painting lessons. In 1876 he went on a study trip to Italy, visited Rome and Naples, among other places, studied in museums and painted a lot from nature. Upon his return, from 1877 to 1900 he lived in Düsseldorf, where the traditions of the local school of landscape painting continued, with the influence of the paintings of J. W. Schirmer, C. F. Lessing or the Achenbach brothers still alive. It was in Düsseldorf that Hartung painted his first - later very popular - spring landscapes, called "Frülingsbilder." In oils and watercolors, he painted views from the Rhine, Moselle and Eifel mountains. Also a painter-landscape artist was the artist's son, Heinrich Hartung, known as the Younger (1888-1966)
