Work description:
Julius Zuber was an artist educated in Vienna and Munich - the influence of that environment is clearly visible in his paintings.
His realistic art is based on warm colors with dominant browns and readily used accents of red.
The painting "The Diviner" proposed in the catalog depicts a genre scene from the life of the people. The clothes of the depicted figures suggest their Hutsul origin, the Hutsul region, by the way, dominated as a theme in Juliusz Zuber's paintings. In the foreground of the painting is a young woman wearing a red shawl on her head and beads around her neck - the eponymous fortune-teller, who reads fortune from her hand to a man whose back is turned to the viewer. The background shows a woman preparing a meal in a cauldron over a fire. The background of the chiromancy scene is a mountainous landscape shrouded in the warm light of the setting sun.
The painting impresses formally with its moodiness and, despite its small format, the multitude of elaborate details. On the other hand, the work catches the attention of the subject itself, arouses curiosity and raises the question about the future as foretold by the fortune teller to the man.
