Marceli Krajewski, Portrait of Wincenty Turno

oil, canvas, size 70 x 57 cm (oval) on the reverse an inscription "Wincenty Turno 1803-1867 "and a paper sticker with the text in black ink "MNP Wyp. Z. M. No. 19 "and the stamp "National Museum in Poznan".

Pair of family portraits - marriage of Helena née Kwilecka Turno and Wincenty Turno - both by Marceli Krajewski. On the male portrait the coat of arms "three anchors "of the Turno family on the female one - signature of the Author and date of the portraits' creation. Marceli Krajewski (1840-1920) Polish portrait painter, participant in the January Uprising of 1863 and friend and mentor of Artur Grottger. He created realistic portraits, working in Poznan, Antwerp, Italy, and from 1891 in France. His works also include historical images of rulers, such as the Jagiellonian series. He studied at the Lviv Polytechnic and then at the Vienna Polytechnic and at a preparatory school for the Academy of Arts in the Austrian capital.
He later engaged in portrait painting in Poznan. He moved from that city to Antwerp, then traveled to Italy to return to Poznan in 1882 and finally moved to France nine years later. He did numerous works on historical subjects for, among others, the castle in Kórnik - now in the collection of the Kórnik Library.
