The landscape in a pre-evening mood is very much in keeping with the region of his native town of Belluno and the southern Venetian Alpine foothills. His preference for landscapes in late light is also evident in his painting "Landschaft im Abendrot", which is in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. In many of his paintings, he depicted landscapes with castles, probably inspired by real-life situations. It was only later that his capricci of ruins predominated. However, as a pupil of his uncle Sebastiano Ricci, with whom he worked throughout his life, he turned more to landscape painting and stage scenery - in contrast to this teacher. This could therefore be one of Ricci's earlier works.
