Michal Alfred Godlewski studied at the Vienna academy under C. Wurzinger and C. J. Geiger. He continued his studies in Paris from 1862 to 1864 under E. Signola. He painted portraits, religious compositions, genre scenes and landscapes.
He participated in Kunstverein exhibitions in Budapest in 1862 and in Vienna in 1872.
From 1868 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, then in Chernivtsi. In 1871 he became a full foreign member of the Munich artists' association (Künstlerverein). Among other things, he exhibited in Krakow in 1872 at the Society of Friends of Fine Arts.
He used oil and watercolor techniques. His works are in the Lviv Picture Gallery.
