Provenance:
Wojciech Gerson Solo Exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw, 1978 (“Girl with a Book,” cat. no. 4)
Private collection of Hanna Waściszewska of Warsaw
Private Collection, Warsaw

The painting depicts a bust of a girl shown in half-profile. The figure is leaning slightly to the left, with her head resting on her hand. Her face, with delicate features, fair complexion, and softly contoured cheeks, is turned toward an open book. The girl has light-colored, smoothly combed hair falling to the sides of her head. She is wearing a light-colored blouse with soft folds and a darker garment draped over her shoulders. At the bottom of the composition, an open book is visible, its pages slightly parted. The background is rendered in a dark, uniform tone, which highlights the figure’s silhouette through chiaroscuro contrast. The painting is set in a decorative, profiled frame with a gilded surface, ornamental corners, and a clearly defined relief. In the lower right corner of the composition is the signature “W. Gerson” (almost identical to the one on the painting “View of the Kościuszko Mound”). The painting underwent minor conservation work (cleaning to remove traces of dirt and replacement of the old varnish).

Condition as shown in the photos
This work was painted by Wojciech Gerson, one of the most important representatives of 19th-century Polish academic painting. This composition belongs to his early creative period, when the artist focused on intimate genre scenes and portraits of a distinctly realistic nature.
The painting was exhibited at the monographic exhibition “Wojciech Gerson 1831–1901” at the National Museum in Warsaw and was listed in the catalog compiled by Janina Zielińska as “Girl with a Book” (cat. no. 4), dated to around 1850–1851. The indicated provenance (the collection of Hanna Waściszewska in Warsaw) further confirms its historical significance. On the reverse is a label bearing the reference “776 b” and a handwritten signature “Sikorski.”
The subject of a young girl engrossed in reading fits into the broad trend of 19th-century realist painting, which emphasized educational values, introspection, and the everyday life of the bourgeoisie. The subtle handling of light and the soft modeling of the face attest to a high level of technical skill and a mastery of academic principles of form. Variants and copies of this composition have been documented, attributed to, among others, Moritz Müller and Louis Urlass, a phenomenon typical of popular depictions with didactic and decorative value. The work is a valuable example of Gerson’s early oeuvre and an important point of reference for research on the development of Polish realism. Its presence in a museum context and its catalog documentation significantly enhance its collector’s and scholarly value.
Wojciech Gerson was born on July 1, 1831, in Warsaw. He was one of the most outstanding representatives of Polish academic painting in the second half of the 19th century and, at the same time, a key figure in the development of the Polish school of realism. He began his artistic education at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Jan Feliks Piwarski and Rafał Hadziewicz. Even at that time, he showed a particular interest in historical painting and realistic studies of nature. From 1853 to 1855, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, and then spent time in Paris (1856–1858), where he encountered European academic art and contemporary trends in historical painting. Upon his return to Warsaw, Gerson embarked on an intensive artistic career. His work centered on two main genres: monumental historical painting and realistic landscape painting. In his historical works, he addressed themes related to Polish history, depicting scenes of a patriotic and narrative nature, with attention to detail and composition. At the same time, he created landscapes—particularly of the Tatra Mountains and Mazovia—in which he combined keen observation of nature with a sense of mood and a synthetic approach to form.
An important aspect of Gerson’s career was his teaching. Beginning in 1865, he taught at the Warsaw Drawing Class (later transformed into the School of Fine Arts), where he trained an entire generation of artists. His students included, among others, Józef Chełmoński, Leon Wyczółkowski, Władysław Podkowiński, and Józef Pankiewicz—artists who played a fundamental role in the development of realism and early modernism in Poland. Gerson actively participated in Warsaw’s artistic life—he took part in numerous domestic and international exhibitions, collaborated with art institutions, and was involved in social and patriotic activities. His work was widely acclaimed during his lifetime, both by critics and collectors.
He died on February 25, 1901, in Warsaw. His body of work is today an important part of Poland’s cultural heritage. The artist’s works are found in major museum collections, including those of the National Museum in Warsaw. As a painter and educator, Wojciech Gerson played a fundamental role in shaping 19th-century Polish art, combining academic tradition with realistic observation of the world and paving the way for the artistic transformations of the turn of the century.
Janina Zielińska was a Polish art historian and museum curator at the National Museum in Warsaw, where she specialized in 19th-century Polish painting. Her scholarly work focused primarily on research into academic realism of the second half of the 19th century. She was the author and co-author of exhibition catalogs and museum publications, which today constitute an important resource for researchers and the art market. A significant publication in her body of work remains the monographic catalog *Wojciech Gerson 1831–1901* (Warsaw 1978). Zielińska also compiled exhibition catalogs for other masters of Polish realism, including Józef Chełmoński and the Kossak family (“Józef Chełmoński (1849–1914),” “The Works of Juliusz, Wojciech, and Jerzy Kossak,” “Juliusz, Wojciech, and Jerzy Kossak” ). Her body of work also includes thematic catalogs, such as “The Village in 19th- and 20th-Century Polish Painting” and the co-authored study “Family Portraits in Polish Art from the Late 16th to the 20th Century” (Warsaw, 1980).
