Silver Mano Figa pendant—a good luck charm—Brazil, first half of the 20th century
The gesture known as Mano Figa (a closed hand with the thumb extended between the index and middle fingers) has ancient roots, dating back to Roman and Etruscan cultures, where it was a powerful symbol of eroticism, fertility, and vitality. It was brought to South America, and specifically to Brazil, by Portuguese colonizers and African slaves.
