Oil on canvas
cm. 97x73. Framed
This sculptural depiction of Saint Augustine, richly attired in mitre and cope and seated at his desk surrounded by books, reflects a post-Caravaggesque pictorial culture indebted to Ribera and, above all, Gregorio and Mattia Preti. While the attribution remains unresolved, Giacomo Farelli has been suggested as a possible candidate by Professor Nicola Spinosa in a communication to the owner.
Private collection.
