[14], p. 139, 2 woodcuts (title page and publisher’s mark at the end), initials, secondary parchment binding.
(Not listed in Estr.) An early 16th-century humanist print, the second edition of Justin’s work in the 16th century, and the first Viennese edition. This volume was produced at the well-known Viennese printing house of Jan Singrenius, the closest collaborator of the Kraków printer Hieronim Wietor. The two printers jointly ran the press from 1510 to 1515. Hieronim Wietor left Kraków in 1510 due to fierce competition from the equally well-known printer Jan Haller. The Kraków-Vienna partnership lasted until 1515, when both men established their own printing houses. One of the most important Renaissance editions of Justin’s *Epitoma Historiarum Philippicarum*, an abridgment of Pompeius Trogus’s monumental *History of the World*, of which only fragments have survived. The forty-four books cover the history and geography of the ancient world—from the earliest kingdoms of the East, through the histories of Persia, the Scythians, Greece, and Macedonia, to Carthage and the beginnings of Roman power. Today, this work stands as one of the most important sources for understanding the content of Trogus’s lost history. Eight pages (124–131) are missing; blank (unprinted) pages have been inserted in their place, and the endpapers are new. In good condition. Rare.
