Castillo del Rey (Castell del Rei), Pollença, Majorca—a medieval rock fortress in the Ternelles Valley, in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, whose origins date back to the Muslim period. In 1231, during the conquest of Majorca by James I the Conqueror, King of Aragon, the castle was one of the last bastions of resistance. After the island was conquered, it was incorporated into the royal estates, hence its name—“Royal Castle.” Perched on hard-to-reach cliffs, the ruins have become one of the defining features of northern Mallorca’s landscape.
