Władysław STACHOWSKI ( 1852–1932)
In 1879, he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg (1879–1888). He also studied in New York, working periodically on farms. After returning to Russia, he graduated in 1888. In 1904, he visited Munich, and from 1905 onward, he lived in the Caucasus. During the 1917 revolution, he left for Munich, and in 1919 he settled permanently in Warsaw. His works were exhibited at that time in Warsaw, Kraków, and Łódź. He was known primarily as a marine painter, drawing inspiration from both the works of Ayvazovsky and English marine painters. He also painted landscapes and genre scenes, most often featuring horses.
