Oil, board, 24 x 30.3 cm, signed l.d.: W. Łoś Munchen 1880.
Włodzimierz Łoś (1849-1888). As a scholarship holder of Roman Sanguszko, he went in 1870-72 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under W. Luszczkiewicz, and from there to Munich. There he studied under O. Seitz and J. Brandt. To shore up his difficult financial situation, he taught drawing, made paintings for quick sale and illustrated for newspapers, and as Perrot he drew on woodblocks for Kłosy and Tygodnik Ilustrowany. According to Slov. Art. Pol., vol. V, pp. 184-5 "[m]ally he drew mainly in oil genre scenes from Podolia, Volhynia and Ukraine, strongly rooted in local realities, with a frequent horse motif. In them he depicted fairs, Cossacks, hunting scenes, and events on the road. He also painted battle scenes on special request." For most of the 1870s and 1880s, he exhibited regularly in Krakow, Lviv, Warsaw and Munich. Paintings in the collections of the country's leading museums.
