A famous Renaissance Szturmak-type helmet, also known as a Burgundian “burgonet” or “casquetto,” dating from the second half of the 16th century and likely made around 1560–80. The helmet originated in Italy and was widely used throughout Europe during the Renaissance, including in Poland, by infantry, cavalry, and the navy.
In the early days of the famous Polish Hussars, Szturmak-type helmets were also used, for example in 1558 in Mikołaj Potocki’s company as part of his personal retinue. Burgundian helmets were also used during the legendary defense of Malta against the Turks in 1565.
The helmet is forged from thick steel sheet; it has a spherical bell with a tall crest visible along its axis, a slightly tapered visor, and a short neck guard. There are cutouts on the sides where the original cheek guards were located. Numerous double holes for the sewn-in lining. The painted decoration was added later. Condition as shown in the photos.
