German painter; he learned to paint from his father Georg Hilz, a painter and restorer working mainly for Bavarian churches. Over time, he began to help and even collaborate with his father. Copying paintings by the old masters - Dürer, Cranach, Altdorfer - also gave him a lot. From 1921 to 1927 he stayed in Munich; he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule there and at the same time privately studied printmaking with Moritz Heymann and painting with Xaver Dietrich. He also honed his painting skills by painting numerous copies of paintings by Rembrandt, Vermer van Delft or Brouver. It was then that he began showing his works at regional exhibitions and working for Bavarian churches. In 1928 he returned to his hometown of Bad Aibling, where he and a group of other young painters organized exhibitions and various cultural events. He worked a lot; in his paintings painted after 1930, critics see influences from the art of Wilhelm Leibel. He soon gained recognition as a fine portraitist, religious painter, landscape painter and, above all, creator of genre scenes of Bavarian village life. From 1938 to 1944, he participated in the Great German Art Exhibitions held at the Haus der Deutscher Kunst in Munich. The paintings were successful and gained the approval of the authorities; one of them was purchased by Joseph Goebbels, two others by Adolf Hitler. For this reason, it was boycotted in the postwar years. It was only a few years later that the artist's unquestionable talent overcame these emotions, and from 1956 Hilz's paintings returned to the showrooms, and he was again able to work as a painter and restorer of church paintings.
