LT.9618 - Dembski 1144 - Flesche 720-721; Silver - 14.38 g - 25 mm - 3 h
MP specimen No. 264 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises,” by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit—acquired from S. Bourgey, November 26, 1997, No. 607.
Wide, slightly scyphate flan with an unusually sharp and nearly complete obverse. Attractive, perfectly centered reverse. Gray patina, fairly uneven, with darker areas. Very Good to Superb.
Tetradrachms of this type have a very distinctive style, often featuring a wide, slightly scyphate flan with a reverse that is frequently paired with a very soft, almost smooth obverse. This specimen features a very clear head, lacking a chin, which is its defining characteristic. Other coins also share this feature, though no explanation for it seems to be available. On this specimen, the design beneath the horse gives the impression that its legs are bound.
