Aeolis, Myrina; AR Tetradrachm; circa 155-145 BC.
Obv. Laureate head of Apollo to the right.
Rv. Apollo Grynios standing to the right, holding a filleted laurel branch in the left hand, phiale in the right hand; a monogram and MYPINAIΩN to the left, omphalos and amphora at feet.
Silver, 16.43 g, 37 mm, 1h. Sacks 6 (misidentified monogram as ΓP).
Grade: Near XF, minting edge crack, flaws in the planchet on the obverse, dark patina. Apparently, only the second known specimen with a monogram in the right field!
A coin from the same dies as Nomos, Obolos Web Auction 20, October 3, 2021, lot 63 = Sacks 6.2a = Naville V, June 18, 1923, lot 2493. So far, it was the only known specimen of the Sacks 6 type, and the only one in this typology with a monogram in the right field, not the left. On the offered specimen, it is clearly visible that the first letter of the monogram is actually E, not Γ. It seems highly probable that this variety is the oldest of all Myrina tetradrachms (see Sacks p. 16, note 47). Well-preserved, intriguing, and extremely rare coin.
