A classic of Polish contemporary art, painter, educator. Exerted a significant influence on Polish painting of the past two decades. Studied at the Painting Department of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of Prof. Stefan Gierowski (1975-1980), where he received his diploma. He worked as a teacher at his alma mater. He was a co-founder of "Gruppa", the most important grouping of the new expression trend in Poland; with "Gruppa" he exhibited in 1982-92, co-edited the artzine "Oj dobrze już". In 1984 he went (with Marek Sobczyk) on a scholarship to Düsseldorf. In 1991-96 he ran (with Marek Sobczyk and Piotr Młodożeniec) the private School of Art in Warsaw. Winner of the 1st Way and Truth Biennial in Wroclaw (1985), a Polityka's Passport (1998), as well as the Cybis Prize (2004) and the Kazimierz Ostrowski Prize (2014).
He began his collaboration with Zderzak in 1989 with the exhibition "Tato, rączki to ludzieki! Dad, hands are cannons!"; the last, his eighteenth, entitled "Caritas," took place in 2020. In 2006, Zderzak Gallery published a catalogueraisonné of his paintings, titled "Jaroslaw Modzelewski. Paintings 1977-2006"; in 2017 it collected the artist's original texts in the book "Texts scattered".
The artist's works are in the collections of, among others, the National Museum in Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan, the Zachęta National Art Gallery in Warsaw, the Art Museum in Lodz, the L.Wyczółkowski District Museum in Bydgoszcz, the CCA Ujazdowski Castle and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, as well as in private collections at home and abroad.
