Papal coins - Nicolò V (1447-1455) Bologna - Bolognino d'oro - Munt. 27 AU (g 3.49) RRRR The Muntoni lists under Nicolò V the anonymous coins of Bologna bearing the decussate keys surmounted by the triregno, both for stylistic reasons and for the fact that the decussate keys were the symbol of Pope Nicolò V. Also noteworthy is the presence of the mint mark characteristic of the same pope. These coins are listed in the CNI as anonymous from the 14th/15th centuries for the ducats and from the 15th century only for the bolognino grosso. This specimen with (unidentified) mintmaster's symbol "G+" turns out to be of extreme rarity, as the only one to date found in the portals dedicated to public auction passages seems to be the one in the 2017 Varesi 70 auction, lot 559, which was, however, sheared and in "BB" conservation. While the "M+" symbol coins of mintmaster Benedetto del Montone, classified by Muntoni at number 28, appear to have appeared in multiple specimens, and in the 2018 NAC 107 auction, lot 345, a specimen classified "SPL" realized €7,000 + fees. The one proposed here appears, in our opinion, both for the non-worn reliefs and for the better beating of the roundel, in definitely superior conservation. Slight undulation.
