Lot information
The picture A young man with fruit is an example of a refined still life from the French period of Othon Coubin, when the author settled permanently in France and his work took on a muted, highly cultivated expression. The composition with fruit on a porcelain bowl is based on the harmony of shapes, muted colors and soft light modeling. Here, the painter achieves an extraordinary balance between the simplicity of the subject and painterly finesse, which elevates an everyday object to the level of an artistic symbol. The work comes from a private collection in Avignon, which also confirms its stylistic classification and provenance. The back of the canvas is stamped with the marking "6F", which refers to the traditional French canvas format of 41 × 33 cm - commonly used for still life in French landscape and studio painting of the 20th century.
Coubin's concept of still life here finds parallels with the work of Paul Cézanne, especially in the emphasis on volume and the calm structure of the composition, as well as with the works of Giorgio Morandi in terms of a meditative, focused rendering of simple things. This painting is an example of the painter's mature phase, when he combined his Central European school with the French tradition and created a distinctive, timeless style.
