The painting is a very free variant of a painting by Claude Lorrain, A Classical Landscape with Cattle Crossing a Stream in Anglesey Abbey (National Trust), UK. The landscapes of Claude Lorrain became the benchmark for classic landscape painting, and inspired countless artists in Europe to create their own works based on his model. In England, John Wootton (1686–1764) also created classic landscapes in the style of Claude Lorrain.
