Oil on canvas
cm. 57x43,3. Framed
This forceful depiction of an elderly, bearded saint is characterised by pronounced naturalism, strong chiaroscuro and expressive intensity, reflecting the influence of Caravaggio. Its sculptural modelling and austere treatment place the painting within the Neapolitan naturalist tradition, in the context of Battistello Caracciolo, Pietro Novelli and Mattia Preti, with particular affinities to Battistello’s Ecce Homo and Flight into Egypt, both in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples.
