"Three years have passed since the first announcement of the intention to publish Jan Matejko's Album, and barely today have I managed to crown this intention with the desired result (...) A publication of this kind is no longer the printing of an ordinary book: the making of each of such woodcuts as, for example, Stefan Batory, the Sejm in Lublin, and so on, required six months of time each, not counting the time used to draw them on wood, while the boards of such Album contains a dozen or so; moreover, such masterpieces could be reproduced only by the first wood engravers, of whom we have not many in our country, and whom we look for in vain abroad...."
