Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse initially learned in a goldsmith's workshop working as an apprentice. He then went on to study art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where his teacher was David d'Angers. Carrier-Belleuse's artistic work was very versatile. The artist was successful internationally. He played a significant role among the French elite - as he was highly regarded by Napoleon III, as well as made busts of important personalities of the time. He was one of the founders of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1862. From 1875 to 1887, he held the position of art director at Manufacture de Sèvres. He is best known today, however, as the master of Auguste Rodin. He left behind a huge number of sculptures and objects of artistic craftsmanship. He enjoyed great success and fame and recognition while he was still alive.
