(Ex. Vol. 18, 31).This classic Renaissance edition encompasses the full range of Horace’s works (odes, epodes, satires, letters, “Ars Poetica”); the text was compiled based on earlier humanist editions and includes the author’s biography as well as a systematic arrangement of the works. This is the third Plantin edition of Horace and one of the most significant in European circulation. A key element of this edition is the contribution of Tomasz Treter, who compiled an extensive index (Index rerum et verborum); the index was published separately (1575), but was often combined with the volume of Horace into a single volume; it was of immense didactic importance—facilitating work with the text for students and scholars. The volume containing the “Index” includes the “Dedication to Cardinal Stan. Hosius, dated Romae ex aedibus tuis, calend. Jan. 1575. In this dedication, he writes that for two years, with the help of Stan. Drożyński (Drosinius), he had been compiling this index. ... Phrases taken from secular writers serve to stimulate the mind. ... The text is printed in three columns. — It is an alphabetical list of all words used by Horace, with an indication of where they are used. The method used by Treter and the value of this index are discussed by Stan. Skimina, “De Thomae Treteri studiis Horatianis” (in *Commentationes Horatianae*, 1935; published by the Academy of Arts).
