This selection of Wolfe’s short stories is based half on works published during his lifetime (in the collection *From Death to Morning*) and half on works published posthumously (in the volume *The Hills Beyond*), written between 1934 and 1937. Some of them had already been published during the author’s lifetime in literary journals, with the exception of the story “There’s No Cure for It,” which had never been published anywhere and was written earlier, in 1929
