Bronze, patinated casting, black marblite; height 83.5 cm.
Italy, cast 19th/20th century.
Nude female figure personifying Fortune, supported by one foot on a wheel rolling through the clouds, blowing a fanfare, supported by her left hand; in her right hand she holds the end of a sash wrapped around her body. Signature on the back: "J. Boulogne." On a cylindrical turned pedestal - relief allegorical scenes with putti figures.
The sculpture is modeled on one of two statues by Giovanni da Bologna, of which the statue of Mercury is widely known, from the collection of the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. There are other versions of the sculpture, where the woman holds a horn of plenty - an attribute of Fortuna. The representation with a fanfare is a personification of Fame.
