ADOLF SCHREYER [1828 - 1899].
He began his painting studies in his hometown at the Frankfurt Städel Institute and continued at the academies in Stuttgart and Munich. During the Crimean War he served in the Austrian army and took part in the expedition to Wallachia. He traveled extensively, visiting Egypt, Syria and Algeria, among other places. From 1862-70 he lived in Paris, eventually settling permanently in Germany in Kronberg im Taunus. He died there in 1899.
Schreyer is known mainly for his paintings of oriental subjects, his depictions of horses being the most highly regarded. He painted ballistic and genre scenes of Moldavian, Wallachian and Arab life.
