Under a high sky with the first yellowish rays of the rising morning sun, the light of which also falls on a large snow-covered path running through a small village. In the foreground on this path a young man pulling a sledge with a barrel behind him. On the right is an old dilapidated building with a garden behind it. In the middle of the picture is a house and a church covered in snow by the sun, and on the left a house in shadow with a small frozen pond in front of it. The few figures that animate the picture cast large shadows due to the incidence of light. Atmospheric, harmonious painting with skillful use of light and shadow.

The artist was a Dutch landscape painter who came to Kleve in 1834. He founded a drawing academy there in 1841. The work of Koekkoek and his students established the Kleve Romantic movement. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and was awarded several medals and decorations.
