Lot information
A painting by Antonin Liehm, which depicts the scenery with the church of St. Peter and Paul in Jenikov against the backdrop of the Bohemian Central Mountains, is a masterpiece of 19th century landscape painting. A striking element of the composition is a figure with a red umbrella, who looks seemingly isolated at the scene before him. This figure is reminiscent of figures from the paintings of the German painter Carl Spitzweg in its placement and detail. As with Spitzweg, the figure is set in a wider landscape context, which gives it a poetic touch. The figure with the umbrella represents a solitary observer, whose position in the composition creates a contrast between the dynamism of the harvest and the quiet contemplation typical of Spitzweg's painting heroes. This painting was exhibited at the prestigious exhibition Beautiful Unity in 1858, which confirms its importance in the context of Czech fine art of that time.
