Hipolit ŚMIERZCHALSKI (1925-2012)
Visual artist, photographer and performer associated with Gdynia. Versatile artist, working on the border of painting, drawing, photography and musical activities. He worked as a photojournalist for Dziennik Bałtycki, a theater photographer and a deck photographer on the transatlantic ship TSS Stefan Batory. His black-and-white photographs are a valuable record of the social and artistic life of the second half of the 20th century. In visual arts, he used mixed techniques, combining irony with experimentation. He signed his works with the pseudonym HIPO. His work is presented by the Emigration Museum in Gdynia, among others.
