Biography
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, receiving his diploma from A. Kobzdej’s studio in 1963. From that year onward, he taught at his alma mater, becoming a professor in 1987. At the same time, he worked in painting, drawing, and printmaking using metal techniques and lithography, as well as—to a lesser extent—commercial art (graphic design and posters). In both of his main fields—painting and printmaking—he achieved significant success and won numerous awards. For a brief period, he was interested in expressive abstraction and material painting. Around 1965, he definitively rejected his earlier experiments and focused on figurative art. He is considered by many critics to be one of the most independent representatives of Polish New Figuration painting. Works such as the gouache *HE RESTED HIS HEAD ON THE TABLE* (1966) and the black-and-white lithographs *ATTACHMENT TO LIFE*, *A PLACE FOR A HUMAN*, and *SLAVE* (1967) set the direction for his artistic exploration, which centered on the human being and humanity.
