Paul Klee (1879-1940) - was a Swiss painter of German origin, considered one of the most important avant-garde artists of the 20th century.

Winter's Sleep is one of four works symbolizing the seasons.
The warm colors juxtaposed with blues are meant to dispel the darkness of winter, while the beating red heart of the sleeping woman heralds the arrival of spring.

The director of the Verve magazine was the well-known publisher Teriade. During the 23 years of the quarterly's existence, he published 10 volumes of lithographs by the most prominent Parisian artists. The magazine had the character of a modernist art magazine. It collaborated with the famous Parisian printing house, Studio Mourlot, founded by Francois Mourlot.
