Painter, graphic artist, writer, essayist, publicist and educator. One of the most important figures in the artistic community of Katowice. He was a professor at the Cracow branch of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, a member of the Cracow Group, the Zagłębie Group and Arkat. He was a creator of drawings, illustrator and book designer, practiced printmaking, easel painting and polychromy.
In the painting and graphic works of Andrzej S. Kowalski, since the late 1950s, organic, free forms of spots with characteristic color tones (browns and yellows and olive greens and grays), composed with a consistent order of geometry, intermingle. The painter's intuitive resolutions are complemented by a clear rational element. With time, he began to introduce geometric or figural motifs into his compositions.
