Krzysztof Kulicki (1938-2026) - Polish scientist (chemist), writer, painter and social activist.
He was born on February 7, 1938 in Warsaw. He graduated with a degree in chemistry and received a PhD, after which he took up scientific work in the team of Professor Sylwester Kaliski at the Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microsynthesis of the Military University of Technology. He was involved in research on thermonuclear energy, for which he received the State Minister's Award.
In the 1980s, he worked as a lecturer in chemistry at the University of Tiaret (Algeria). After returning to Poland, he was associated, among other things, with the Central Research and Development Center for Research and Teaching Equipment "Cobrabit." He also conducted work on water purification technologies, obtaining his own patent solutions in this field.
In parallel, he developed literary and artistic activities. He made his debut as a writer in 1972, publishing the novel "Straight Ahead." He is the author of more than a dozen prose works, including "These Few People" (1974), "The Unkind Streets" (1978), "Fugitives from the Street of Dreams" (1979), "Consent Square" (1982) and "KIF" (1989). His late book "Wehikuł czasu.pl" (2022) is autobiographical and summarizes his life experiences.
He was a member of the Union of Polish Writers (Warsaw Branch). From 2006 to 2013 he served as founder and president of the Association for the Promotion of Polish Creativity.
As a painter, he worked under the pseudonym Kulwietis, referring to his Lithuanian family roots (surname Kulwieć/Kulvietis). He has been creating since the 1990s, and has exhibited his works in Warsaw galleries and abroad (including in Paris, at the famous Parisian art fair "Bastille"), and his paintings are in private collections in the West. Kulwietis' paintings were maintained in a characteristic convention belonging to the art brut style, and he often took up the subject of female portraiture.
He died on January 8, 2026 in Warsaw. He was buried at the Powązki Military Cemetery.
He left a body of work combining scientific, literary and artistic activities, being an example of an artist with broad interests and interdisciplinary activity.
